DID YOU KNOW? Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The onset, progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another. Today, treatments and advances in research are giving new hope to people affected by the disease.

The National MS Society Blue Ridge Chapter helps each person address the challenges of living with MS. The Society helps people affected by MS by funding cutting-edge research, driving change through advocacy, facilitating professional education, and providing programs and services that help people with MS and their families move their lives forward.

  • We are moving research forward by relentlessly pursuing prevention, treatment and cure.
  • We are moving to reach out and respond to individuals, families and communities living with multiple sclerosis.
  • We are moving politicians and legislation to champion the needs of people with MS through activism, advocacy and influence.
  • We are moving to mobilize the millions of people who want to do something about MS now.

Thank you for helping make a difference!

MEMORIES IN THE MAKING The moments we will always remember!

  • Our dinner program saluting Tour de Vine’s finest: Kenny Wingfield and his last ride. We’re thrilled to announce Kenny will be featured in our National MS Society magazine Momentum. As soon as we get the press details, we will be sure to send them your way!
  • A memorable speech from Pat Doorenbos. Pat shared with us her remarkable story while reminding us that You Do Make a Difference and Every Moment Counts.
  • Stinson Vineyard bandanas – what a great way to cool down during the ride!! Thank you Stinson!
  • Last year, Gary Smoot missed participating in Tour de Vine. It was only his second missed appearance in the event’s 23 year history. One year ago, instead of putting his feet on bike pedals, Smoot was struggling to get them on the ground. He was using the aid of a wheelchair and crutches after breaking his pelvis in a work related injury. This past weekend, he miraculously returned for the 2011 event, riding his bike for 165 miles in two days. Welcome back Gary!
  • Everyone is talking trout! Buck Island BBQ came through for an amazing finish line meal!
  • Storming through the Finish Line! The storm came through at the end of the ride and several amazing riders kept going despite the wind, torrential rain, and tree limbs falling around them!
  • Great comments on new 75 mile route on Saturday and the signage on the route
  • Fabulous Music presented by 20 South
  • Team Florence and Ben’s head shaving challenge!
  • Team Grateful Tread’s Challenges
  • Honoring the “dinosaurs” who have accepted the challenge year after year – we appreciate your dedication!

What are your favorite memories? Send them in and we'll send them out! teresa.knizner@nmss.org

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!  Please tell us what you think by filling out our survey!

I want to take this opportunity to thank both participants and volunteers for a most memorable first ride as Development Coordinator for Bike MS: Tour de Vine. Putting faces with names that I have become so much endeared to already, was a gift from each of you. It is an honor to work with each of you in our mission to find a cure for MS and experience the reality of what we do really does make a difference. In the words of Pat Doorenbos, every moment counts – you do make a difference in someone’s life, particularly with those that have MS.

Sincerely,

Terry Knizner
